I’ve DONE something I’ve nodded to theoretically for a long, long time.
Science says our best work is done in the “Zone of Proximal Development.” That’s a big phrase to describe the space that’s just beyond a person’s comfort zone, but not so far beyond it that they shut down.
Today, in the final hours of a 3-day retreat, a comment was made about how humans thrive when they regularly feel challenged just outside of their comfort zone.
My eyes opened to how much I’ve actually lived into this the last couple years. I said “yes” to a move to a place I’ve never lived and where I didn’t know anyone. Then there was the “yes” to launching into a 100-day art project with the theme of “Going Off-Leash.” I said “yes” to a scholar mom’s homeschool group where I read all sorts of books and articles way out of my typical interests.
And the list goes on.
I HAVE stretched beyond the usual…but not so far I snapped. And I gotta say, it’s been great! (Well, except those moments of “Who am I kidding?!? Why did I say I’d do that?”)
I DO feel more alive, more engaged, more thankful.
Intentionally reaching and stretching and challenging myself just outside of my comfort zone has been so worth it.
