I SURE AS HECK HOPE your mama told you not to look at the sun.
And after you aimed your eyes straight at it anyway— even though she told you not to look (you little stinker) —what did you see afterward?
I’m guessing that like me, you saw spots.
So here’s what I’m thinkin’…
There’s the thing we look at. (The sun.)
Then there’s what we see differently afterward or as a result. (Stuff around us looking wonky because of the spots in our eyes.)
They’re not the same thing. And yet, we don’t have one without the other.
In this 100-day project, I sit down and do the art.
Meanwhile, I think about it. I wonder what it means. I’m curious why I “saw” this thing I’m trying to create in my mind’s eye and am now seeking to replicate it in the world. (Though it NEVER looks comes out like that gorgeously, fantastic idea of mine.)
I like to make up meanings about what I make. I find that this piece will probably lead me to tomorrow’s piece, even though I have NO IDEA what that next one will be. (Though perhaps you have already noticed how this creation relates to the "Joke's On Me" post from 2 days ago.)
The act of making, begets more. It’s like that law of physics, “A body in motion tends to stay in motion.”
To me, your comments on my project are also an act of making. I believe they become something more in YOUR world (and in mine too!) as a result of you taking a moment to slow down, to focus, to respond.
Clearly, “Art” isn’t the only place this multiplication applies.
But I didn’t have to tell you that. Your daring wild-child self understood this the moment you took that first look at the sun.
